A typical day as a Healthcare Navigator involves a combination of consumer-facing and team support responsibilities. I usually start my day by reviewing my schedule and following up on any pending tasks from the previous day. I schedule and confirm appointments, assist consumers with navigating healthcare systems, and ensure they have access to the services they need. Throughout the day, I answer calls and respond to inquiries, both from consumers and colleagues, providing guidance or connecting them with appropriate resources.
I am also the Family Healthcare Foundation’s Senior Program Coordinator. In this role, I participate in regular meetings with my team, government agencies, and national or community partners to coordinate care and discuss ongoing initiatives. In addition, I help plan and sometimes lead presentations or workshops, such as “La Red de Padres”, which aims to support and educate parents in our community. Flexibility is key in this role, as priorities can shift depending on the consumer and community needs. Overall, it’s a dynamic position that requires strong communication, organization, and a passion for helping others.
2. Can you share a success story where your work made a positive impact in someone’s life?
One success story that really stands out to me involved a consumer who had recently immigrated to the U.S. He was initially living in New York and later relocated to Florida. During his time in the Northeast, he had experienced housing instability and exposure to extreme cold, which severely impacted his health, specifically, he developed a critical condition in one of his feet.
When he came to us, he was unsure of his ability to access or afford medical coverage. I worked closely with him to assess his eligibility, gather the necessary documentation, and successfully enroll him in a health plan. He later shared with me that if he hadn’t received coverage and care when he did, he would have lost his foot to amputation.
That moment really reinforced the life-saving nature of the work we do. His gratitude was overwhelming and heartfelt, and it reminded me that behind every enrollment or follow-up call, there is a real person whose life can be profoundly changed. Stories like this are why I am so passionate about this role.
3. How do you build trust and educate the community about healthcare programs?
Consistency, and authentic engagement. I focus on meeting people where they are, both physically and emotionally. That means showing up in trusted community spaces like churches, schools, and local events, and using language that is clear, respectful, and often bilingual to ensure nothing is lost in translation.
I take time to listen first, to understand their concerns, past experiences with the healthcare system, and any barriers they may face. Whether it is fear due to immigration status, lack of information, or historical mistrust, I approach each interaction with empathy and patience. I also collaborate with community leaders and organizations that already have established relationships within these groups, which helps reinforce trust and credibility.
Programs like “La red de Padres” allow us to offer information in a group setting that feels more like a conversation than a lecture. Through these efforts, we not only provide access to resources, but also empower consumers with knowledge and the confidence to advocate for their health and their families.
4. What’s a common misconception people have about healthcare coverage that you wish everyone understood?
A common misconception is that healthcare coverage is either too expensive or too complicated to obtain, especially among Latinos and other marginalized communities. Many people assume they won’t qualify for affordable options or that the process is overwhelming. In reality, programs like Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act offer subsidized plans or no-cost plans, and there are resources available to assist with enrollment.
Another misunderstanding is that once insured, all healthcare services are covered without additional costs. However, insurance plans often have networks of preferred providers, and seeing out of network doctors can lead to higher out of pocket expenses. It is crucial to educate communities about these nuances to empower them to make informed decisions about their healthcare coverage. By providing clear information and support, we can help consumers navigate the system and access the care they need.
5. What’s a rewarding moment that reminds you why you love this work?
What keeps me passionate about this work is not just one standout moment, it is the collective impact of many small, meaningful interactions. Each time I help someone understand their healthcare options, assist them in enrolling in coverage, or connect them to vital resources, I see a ripple effect. These moments build trust and empower individuals to take control of their health.
Working closely with Latinos and other marginalized communities, I’ve witnessed how culturally sensitive outreach and consistent support can transform uncertainty into confidence. Whether it is through community partners presentations like ReachUp Inc or one-on-one guidance, these efforts help demystify the healthcare system and make it more accessible. It is incredibly rewarding to see individuals not only access the care they need but also share their knowledge with others, fostering a community of informed and empowered individuals. This collective empowerment is what makes the work so fulfilling and reinforces my commitment to keep assisting consumers.
6. What inspired you to become a Healthcare Navigator?
I have always been passionate about ensuring that people have the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions for themselves, their families, and their communities. Transitioning into the role of a Healthcare Navigator allowed me to focus on this passion. It provided me with the opportunity to guide individuals through the complexities of the healthcare system, demystify processes and advocate for their needs.
What truly inspires me in this role is the ability to bridge gaps in healthcare access and understanding. By fostering trust and providing clear, culturally sensitive information, I can empower community members to take charge of their health journeys. It is incredibly rewarding to see individuals gain confidence in navigating their healthcare options, knowing that I’ve played a part in that transformation.
