Back to School, Back to Coverage: Why Health Insurance Matters Now

As students sharpen pencils and families return to routines, there is one school supply that protects learning more than any backpack or binder: healthcare coverage. Executive Director Katie Roders Turner shares “why” in our latest blog post.

When children and their caregivers have health insurance, they are more likely to get preventive care, manage chronic conditions, and return to school or work faster when illness strikes. That means fewer missed school days, less stress for parents, and better health outcomes for our community.

At the Family Healthcare Foundation, our mission is to connect families across Tampa Bay with affordable, reliable coverage. The start of the school year is the perfect time to make sure everyone is protected.

Why Coverage Matters for Students and Families

  • Healthy students learn more. Regular checkups, dental visits, vision screenings, and vaccinations keep small issues from becoming big obstacles in the classroom.
  • Families gain peace of mind. An urgent care visit or a prescription should not derail a monthly budget. Coverage turns a crisis into a plan.
  • Preventive care saves time and money. Managing asthma, diabetes, or other conditions is easier when you can see the right provider at the right time.
  • Sports and activities are safer. Many extracurricular programs require physicals and up to date immunizations. Coverage helps you meet those requirements without delay.
  • Common Questions We Hear Right Now

We missed open enrollment. Do we have to wait?
Not necessarily. Many families qualify for coverage year-round through Florida KidCare or Medicaid. Life changes such as a move, a new baby, a loss of other coverage, or a change in income can also open a special enrollment period for other programs.

What if we had Medicaid before and lost it during the past year?
You may still qualify. Even if you do not, your child might be eligible through Florida KidCare, and adults may have low-cost options. We can help you check quickly.

Is coverage too expensive for our family right now?
Our team can show you options side by side and help you choose a plan that fits your budget.
If you live in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, or Polk, our Navigators can help you understand which program fits your situation and what to do next.
