1. What does a typical day as a Healthcare Navigator look like for you?
My day typically begins with checking in on families I’ve supported over the past week or two. I follow up to ensure their issues have been resolved and to see if they need any additional assistance. I also spend time connecting with our partner organizations, whether through phone calls or emails, to share updates about our services and strengthen collaboration efforts.
2. Can you share a success story where your work made a positive impact in someone’s life?
I recently worked with a mother of three who was uninsured because her employer didn’t offer health coverage. While her children were enrolled in the state’s health insurance for children, she was assigned a Share of Cost, which created confusion and limited access to care. I took the time to explain what that meant and walked her through affordable insurance options available through the Marketplace. In the end, we found a plan that fit her budget and provided the coverage she needed.
3. How do you build trust and educate the community about healthcare programs?
I build trust by providing honest, unbiased information and taking time to clearly explain any concept or terms our clients are unfamiliar with. I make sure every question is answered and that people feel heard and supported throughout the entire process.
4. What’s a common misconception people have about healthcare coverage that you wish everyone understood?
A common misconception is that all Marketplace plans offer the same benefits at different price points—but that’s not the case. Plans can differ significantly in terms of prescription coverage, provider networks, co-pays, deductibles, and more. Each one has its own unique features, which is why we take the time to understand our clients’ specific needs and help them choose a plan that offers the right balance of coverage and affordability.
5. What’s a rewarding moment that reminds you why you love this work?
When I follow up with families, they’re often eager to share how smooth the process was and how much of a difference it made in their lives. Hearing their relief and gratitude reinforces the impact of the work we do every day.
6. What inspired you to become a Healthcare Navigator?
The work we do at the Family Healthcare Foundation goes far beyond simply helping families find health insurance. I truly believe we’re making a lasting impact. It was inspiring to see our Navigators empower individuals, ease financial burdens, and help families feel supported and seen during some of their most vulnerable moments.
7. What’s your favorite thing about living and working in Tampa Bay?
I love Tampa’s diverse community and the different variety of food spots around town.
8. What’s a hobby or passion you pursue outside of work?
When I’m not at work, I enjoy recreating recipes I’ve seen on the Food Network.
9. What’s your favorite way to stay healthy and active in Tampa Bay?
I stay active by playing sports such as flag football, basketball, soccer, or tennis. I personally think it’s a great way to stay fit while having fun.
10. If you could describe Tampa Bay residents in one word, what would you say, and why?
“Supportive.” After two major hurricanes, I saw firsthand how the community came together to help each other in powerful and meaningful ways.
